Routine scans
First trimester
- Dating / viability scan, 6 to 9 weeks: confirms the pregnancy is in the uterus, heartbeat, number of babies, and due date
- NT scan, 11w 0d to 13w 6d: screening for chromosomal conditions with a blood test, plus early anatomy
Second and third trimester
- Anomaly scan, 18 to 22 weeks: detailed check of the baby's organs, placenta, and fluid
- Growth scan, usually 28 to 36 weeks: baby's size, fluid, and position
Additional scans some pregnancies need
- Doppler scan: blood flow to the baby, often advised for high blood pressure, diabetes, or a small baby
- Fetal echo: detailed heart scan, usually around 20 to 24 weeks, for selected pregnancies
- Cervical length: for women at risk of early labour
Your obstetrician decides which of these you need based on your history and earlier scans.
Before your scan
- Bring your previous scan reports and your doctor's referral
- Ask whether a full bladder is needed; this varies by scan and stage
- Form F under the PCPNDT Act is completed for every pregnancy scan
