Fibroscan test in HSR Layout? Liver elastography, explained
If your doctor has asked for a Fibroscan, they want to know how stiff your liver is, which shows how much scarring (fibrosis) there is. At Nitara Scans this is measured by shear wave elastography on the Samsung V7, done and reported by Dr. Nayana N Sunku, with your liver ultrasound in the same visit.

Shear wave elastography and Fibroscan: what is different
Both tests answer the same question, how stiff the liver is. They use different machines.
| Liver elastography at Nitara (shear wave, Samsung V7) | Fibroscan (transient elastography) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it measures | Liver stiffness in kPa, fibrosis stage F0–F4 | Liver stiffness in kPa, fibrosis stage |
| Picture of the liver | Yes: the doctor sees the liver while measuring and places each reading in healthy tissue, away from vessels | No full picture of the liver; the probe is placed using a simple guide trace |
| Liver ultrasound | Done in the same visit: fatty liver grade, gallbladder, spleen, lumps | A separate ultrasound is needed for the rest of the liver |
| Fat measurement | Fatty liver graded on the ultrasound | A fat score (CAP) |
| Fluid in the abdomen | Can usually still be measured | Often cannot be measured |
Medical guidelines accept both methods for staging liver fibrosis. FibroScan is a trademark of Echosens; Nitara Scans does not use the FibroScan device.
Benefits of liver elastography
- Often avoids a liver biopsy. For most people, the stiffness reading is enough for the doctor to stage scarring, with no needle, no bleeding risk and no hospital stay.
- Finds scarring early. Fatty liver and early scarring usually cause no symptoms, and blood tests can look normal. A stiffness reading shows scarring while it can still improve with weight loss, diet, exercise and treatment.
- Shows whether things are improving. It is safe to repeat, so the kPa number can be compared year to year to see if lifestyle changes or medicines are working.
- Helps your doctor plan. The stage helps decide who can simply be followed up and who needs a liver specialist or more tests.
- Measured where the liver is clearest. Because Dr. Nayana sees the liver on screen, each reading is placed in healthy liver tissue, away from blood vessels and the ribs, and the machine flags any reading that is not reliable.
- A full liver check in one visit. The same scan grades fatty liver and looks at the gallbladder, the size of the spleen and any lump in the liver.
- Simple for you. No fasting, no needles, no radiation, about 15 minutes, and the report the same day.
- Useful for many people: fatty liver, diabetes, weight around the waist, regular alcohol use, hepatitis B or C, and people on long-term medicines that can affect the liver.
What your report shows
- Liver stiffness (kPa): the median of several readings, with how consistent they were.
- Fibrosis stage: F0 (no scarring) to F4 (cirrhosis).
- Fatty liver grade: from the ultrasound in the same visit.
- The rest of the upper abdomen as seen on the scan: gallbladder, spleen and any lump.
Dr. Nayana explains what the stage means before you leave. Your gastroenterologist or physician decides treatment and when to check again.
Your visit
- No fasting: eat and drink normally.
- Bring your liver blood tests (LFT), the prescription and earlier scan reports.
- You lie on your back with the right arm raised; the probe rests between the ribs on the right side, and you hold your breath for a few seconds for each reading.
- Painless, no needles, no X-rays. About 15 minutes.
- Printed report the same day; UPI, cash or card.

Fibroscan and liver elastography: common questions
My doctor has written "Fibroscan". Can I do this test instead?
Yes. Your doctor wants to know how stiff your liver is, and liver elastography answers exactly that, with a stiffness number in kPa and a fibrosis stage. Gastroenterologists and physicians who ask for a Fibroscan accept this report. If you are unsure, show the prescription when you book.
Is liver elastography the same as Fibroscan?
Both measure liver stiffness with sound waves, but with different machines. FibroScan is a dedicated device (transient elastography) that gives a stiffness number without a picture of the liver. Nitara uses shear wave elastography on the Samsung V7 ultrasound, so the doctor sees your liver on the screen while she measures. Medical guidelines accept both methods for staging liver fibrosis.
Do I need to fast before liver elastography?
No. Eat normally. No preparation is needed. Bring your liver blood tests (LFT) and any earlier scan reports.
What does the report show?
The liver stiffness in kPa, the fibrosis stage from F0 (no scarring) to F4 (cirrhosis), and the fatty liver grade from the ultrasound done in the same visit, along with the rest of the liver, gallbladder and spleen as seen on the scan.
How long does it take?
About 15 minutes. Dr. Nayana explains the stage to you before you leave, and the report is ready the same day.
What is the cost of a Fibroscan / liver elastography test in HSR Layout?
₹2,500 at Nitara Scans, paid at the clinic by UPI, cash or card. No advance is needed to book.
Who should get it?
People with fatty liver on an earlier scan, raised liver enzymes, diabetes or heavy weight around the waist, regular alcohol use, hepatitis B or C, or a known liver condition being followed up. Your doctor will say how often; fatty liver is commonly checked every 6 to 12 months.
Can it be done if I have fluid in the abdomen or am overweight?
Usually yes. Because the measurement is taken under ultrasound guidance, the doctor can choose a clear window in the liver. If a reading is not reliable, the report says so.
