Dating and viability scan: when to book and what it shows

The dating or viability scan is usually the first ultrasound of pregnancy. It confirms where the pregnancy is, whether a heartbeat is seen, how many babies there are, and gives an accurate due date that later scans are timed from.

What this article covers

  • When to book the scan
  • What it confirms
  • Abdominal or transvaginal
  • How to prepare
  • If the result is unclear

Quick facts

  • Usually done at 6 to 10 weeks
  • Heartbeat is often seen from about 6 to 7 weeks
  • Sets the due date for NT and anomaly scans
  • Transvaginal gives clearer images early on
  • Sex determination is not done

When to book

Most women have this scan between 6 and 10 weeks, counted from the first day of the last period. Before about 6 weeks the pregnancy may be too small to see a heartbeat, which can mean an inconclusive result and a repeat visit.

Your doctor may advise an earlier scan if you have pain, bleeding, a previous ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage, or conceived through fertility treatment.

Once the due date is set, book your NT scan for 11 weeks 0 days to 13 weeks 6 days. That window cannot be extended.

What the scan confirms

  • Location: that the pregnancy is inside the uterus and not ectopic
  • Viability: whether a heartbeat is seen for the stage of pregnancy
  • Number of babies: and, for twins, whether they share a placenta. This matters for how the pregnancy is monitored
  • Dating: crown-rump length (CRL) is measured to give the most accurate due date
  • Other findings: such as fibroids or ovarian cysts that your doctor should know about

Abdominal or transvaginal?

Early in pregnancy, a transvaginal (internal) scan usually gives clearer pictures, because the probe sits closer to the uterus. It is safe for the pregnancy and takes a few minutes. An abdominal scan may be enough later in the first trimester.

The scan method is always explained first and done only with your consent. You are welcome to have a female companion in the room.

How to prepare

  • For an abdominal scan, you may be asked to come with a comfortably full bladder
  • For a transvaginal scan, you will be asked to empty your bladder first
  • Bring your pregnancy test result, the date of your last period, and your doctor’s note
  • Form F under the PCPNDT Act is completed for every pregnancy scan, so carry a photo ID

If the result is not clear yet

Sometimes the pregnancy is too early to confirm a heartbeat, or the dates are uncertain. This is common and does not by itself mean something is wrong. A repeat scan 7 to 14 days later usually gives a clear answer. Dr. Nayana explains what was seen and when to return before you leave.
