Why Nitara Scans for diagnostic imaging in HSR Layout
Nitara Scans is an appointment-led diagnostic centre in HSR Layout run by Dr. Nayana N Sunku. Every scan is explanation-led — findings are discussed with the patient after the scan, not just handed over in a report.
DMRD · DNB Radiology · Fetal Medicine Fellow. Former NICU radiologist at Ovum Hospital, Bengaluru.
Topics are chosen based on what is seasonally relevant — monsoon, scan windows, awareness months and local health trends.
HSR Layout, Koramangala, Bellandur, Sarjapur Road, BTM Layout and Electronic City.
PCOS — The Diagnosis That Changes Everything
PCOS is the most-searched women's health topic in Bengaluru in 2026. Studies estimate up to 1 in 5 Indian women of reproductive age may have PCOS, yet the majority go years without a formal diagnosis. Irregular periods, stubborn weight gain, facial hair, acne on the jawline — many women attribute these to stress and move on.
They shouldn't. Untreated PCOS significantly raises the risk of Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and infertility — all of which are preventable with early management.
What does a pelvic ultrasound reveal in PCOS?
A pelvic USG allows Dr. Nayana to directly visualise both ovaries, count follicles (the updated 2018 threshold is 20 or more follicles of 2–9 mm in at least one ovary), measure ovarian volume and assess the uterine lining. The classic "string of pearls" appearance — multiple small follicles arranged around the ovarian periphery with a bright central stroma — is the hallmark ultrasound finding.
Monsoon Hits Bengaluru — What Your Organs Face
June marks the start of Bengaluru's southwest monsoon. Waterlogging means more mosquito breeding, leading to dengue and chikungunya. Contaminated water spreads typhoid and stomach infections. Bengaluru already accounts for a disproportionate share of Karnataka's dengue burden even before the peak rains.
An abdominal ultrasound is a quick, radiation-free way to assess the liver, gallbladder, spleen and kidneys — all of which can be affected during monsoon illnesses.
- Dengue / viral fever — liver enlargement, gallbladder wall thickening and pleural effusion are all detectable on USG
- Liver health — monsoon dietary changes and waterborne pathogens can stress the liver
- Kidney stones — dehydration from gastrointestinal illness concentrates urine and increases stone formation risk
Pregnant during monsoon? Don't miss these windows
Heavy rains and traffic in Bengaluru make it tempting to postpone scans. But certain obstetric scan windows have fixed time limits — missing them means losing critical diagnostic information permanently.
- NT Scan — 11 to 13 weeks 6 days. Screens for Down syndrome. Window closes after 14 weeks.
- Anomaly Scan — 18 to 22 weeks. Reviews all major organ systems.
- Growth Scan — 28 to 36 weeks. Monitors baby size, fluid and placenta.
Thyroid Disorders — The Condition Bengaluru's Working Women Are Missing
Thyroid disorders — particularly hypothyroidism — are among the most underdiagnosed conditions affecting women in Indian cities. Bengaluru's high-stress tech workforce is especially vulnerable. The symptoms mimic burnout almost perfectly: fatigue, weight gain, brain fog, mood changes, irregular periods, hair loss and dry skin.
Women are 5–8 times more likely to develop thyroid disease than men. Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's thyroiditis are especially common in the 25–45 age group and can cause infertility and pregnancy complications if unmanaged.
What a thyroid ultrasound assesses
- Gland size and echogenicity — Hashimoto's produces a distinctive hypoechoic, heterogeneous appearance
- Thyroid nodules — size, composition, vascularity and TIRADS classification guide whether biopsy or monitoring is needed
- Lymph nodes — relevant when thyroid cancer is being evaluated
- Post-treatment monitoring — essential after surgery or radioiodine therapy
NT Scan Season — June Closes Many First-Trimester Windows
For women who conceived in February, March or April, June places them in the critical 11–14 week NT scan window. This scan is one of the most important tests of the entire pregnancy — and once the window closes, it cannot be repeated.
- The NT scan must be done between 11 weeks 0 days and 13 weeks 6 days
- After 14 weeks, nuchal fold measurement is no longer accurate — the information is lost permanently
- Combined with PAPP-A and free beta-hCG blood tests, it forms the most sensitive non-invasive screen for trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) and trisomy 18
What the NT scan assesses
- Nuchal Translucency (NT) measurement — fluid at the back of the baby's neck. NT greater than 3.5 mm warrants further evaluation.
- Nasal bone — absence is a soft marker for Down syndrome
- Crown-Rump Length (CRL) — confirms gestational age and corrects any LMP discrepancy
- Fetal heart rate — normal range at this stage is 150–175 bpm
- Early anatomy — brain, spine, abdominal wall, limb buds
- Cervical length — screens for preterm labour risk
Dr. Nayana holds a Fetal Medicine Fellowship and performed NT scans at Ovum Hospital, Bengaluru — one of the city's leading maternity centres. Every measurement is taken to the highest standard.
Vitamin D & Bone Health — Bengaluru's Sunny-but-Deficient Paradox
Bengaluru has plenty of sunshine — yet Vitamin D deficiency affects an estimated 70–80% of urban professionals in Indian cities, with women faring worse than men. Indoor office culture, sun avoidance for skin-tone reasons and covering clothing all reduce skin exposure to sunlight.
Vitamin D deficiency in women leads to accelerated bone loss, increased fracture risk, muscle weakness and — importantly — has been linked to PCOS, depression, impaired fertility and poor immune function. The decisions women make about bone health in their 30s determine their fracture risk in their 50s and beyond.

Frequently asked questions
What scans are covered in this health guide?
This guide covers obstetric scans (NT scan, anomaly scan, growth scan), pelvic and fertility scans (PCOS evaluation, follicular monitoring), general imaging (abdominal, thyroid, musculoskeletal), and seasonal health topics relevant to Bengaluru each month.
Why is the NT scan so urgent in June?
Women who conceived in February, March or April reach the 11–14 week window in June. This is the only time the NT scan can be done — the window closes permanently after 13 weeks 6 days and cannot be repeated at a later stage.
Can monsoon illnesses be detected on ultrasound?
Yes. An abdominal USG can detect liver enlargement, gallbladder changes and other organ effects of dengue and other monsoon infections. It also assesses kidney stones, which increase in risk with dehydration from gastrointestinal illness.
